Egypt and Mauritania Discuss Strengthening Agricultural Cooperation to Achieve Sustainable Development

Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Mr. Alaa Farouk, met on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, with Mr. Sidi Ahmed Ould Abah, Mauritania’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, to discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in the agricultural sector between the two countries.

Strategic Partnership in Agriculture and Food Security

During the meeting, the two ministers discussed developing a strategic partnership between Egypt and Mauritania aimed at achieving sustainable agricultural development and food security, as well as strengthening cooperation in agricultural research and knowledge exchange between the agricultural research centers of both countries.

Both sides emphasized the importance of benefiting from Egypt’s extensive expertise in supporting agricultural research and improving the productivity of key crops such as rice, wheat, maize, and vegetables, in addition to developing new varieties of other strategic crops that support food security in both nations.

Establishing a Branch of Egypt’s Agricultural Research Center in Mauritania

The discussions also covered the possibility of establishing a branch of Egypt’s Agricultural Research Center in Nouakchott, the Mauritanian capital, to serve as a regional hub for transferring Egyptian agricultural technology and expertise to Mauritania and neighboring African countries.

Supporting Agricultural Investment and Trade

The ministers also discussed opportunities for joint agricultural investment and ways to encourage the private sector in both countries to establish integrated agricultural projects, as well as enhancing bilateral trade in agricultural products and removing obstacles that may hinder trade flows — all in a way that serves the mutual interests of the Egyptian and Mauritanian peoples.

Egypt’s Support for Arab and African Partners

Minister Alaa Farouk reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to providing full technical support and cooperation to its Arab and African partners, emphasizing the deep-rooted historical relations between Egypt and Mauritania.

He also announced the Ministry’s readiness to dispatch a technical delegation of Egyptian experts and researchers to Mauritania to conduct field assessments and identify specific agricultural development needs, in addition to expanding training programs for Mauritanian specialists through the Egyptian International Center for Agriculture and other specialized training institutes.

A New Step in Strengthening Agricultural Cooperation
