The Plant Pathology Research Institute organized a workshop titled “Plant Diseases and Vegetable Seed Production in Egypt.”
The event addressed the challenges of local seed production and aimed to reduce reliance on imported vegetable seeds, helping to lower the foreign currency import bill.
🌱 Producing Peat Moss and Biofertilizers from Waste
Dr. Mohamed El-Khouly, Director of the Soils, Water and Environment Research Institute, announced a partnership with the private sector to produce peat moss and biofertilizers from organic waste.
The initiative aims to supply 20–25% of nitrogen fertilizers needed for old lands and 15% for new lands, reducing reliance on imported chemical fertilizers.
🐔 Developing Local Poultry Breeds
The Agricultural Research Center explored cooperation with the private sector to develop local poultry breeds that can withstand Egypt’s climate.
This aims to achieve self-sufficiency in poultry meat by multiplying local breeds of parent and grandparent stock.
🧪 International Cooperation in Potato Seed Production
The Horticultural Research Institute welcomed a Korean expert to help transfer potato seed production technologies and test Korean potato varieties in Egypt.
This initiative is part of a collaboration between the institute and Kangwon National University in South Korea.
